Students from BMS and BHS recently attended National History Day’s National Competition competing against students from across the country in various events. Rachel James and Sydney Sumner from BMS competed in the documentary category. Their entry, “Changing the Game: Title IX and College Sports,” made it to the final round of competition. The entry was ranked in the best 14 documentaries in the country. Lucy Britt, Emily Eyestone and Wilson Hammett from BHS also competed in the documentary category. The title of their entry was “The Ultimate Compromise.” While the students did not proceed to the finals, they did win “The best entry in Virginia” award for non finalist entries. National History Day is a year-long program that culminates with a national contest in June. The event is sponsored by National History Day, Inc., an education organization that helps teachers meet educational standards; disseminates high quality curriculum materials; and sponsors challenging contests that teach students the critical skills they need to be effective citizens in the 21st century. More than 87 students from Montgomery County participated in the National History Day District III competition in March.Sixteen of these students received either a first or second place award and qualified to the Virginia History Day competition in April. Twelve of the students attended the state event. Britt, Eyestone, and Hammett from BHS placed second at the state competition with Sumner and James from BMS placing first to proceed to the national event. Debbie Sharp, Shpresa Mykerezi, Reba Taylor, and Marti Hale, gifted resource teachers, have worked with students on National History Day since the fall.
