The Montgomery County Clerk of the Circuit Court has announced the following changes concerning Civil Filing and Notary Services, which will take effect on Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Civil Filing Fee Increase Circuit Court filing fees for civil cases will increase by $5 effective July 1, 2008, due to legislation passed in the General Assembly, Effective July 1, 2008, all Virginia notaries are required to place a seal on all notarized documents. The seal must be placed near the notary’s signature and be sharp, legible, permanent, and photographically reproducible. Notary services are now available in the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. However, it is policy that staff will not notarize documents to be recorded here in the Clerk’s office such as wills, deeds, easements, statements of owners, powers-of-attorney, etc. Notary services are free of charge and available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

I appreciate the Clerk of Court offering this public service. It is nice to see a public official follow through with a promise. Thanks to to the Clerk's office for informing the public about what changes are upcoming for citizens that frequent the office. I personally have always have been turned away in the Courthouse when asking for a Notary and told to go elsewhere. Kudos to our new Clerk for making this happen.

I'm sure there's logic in NOT providing notary services for documents to be recorded at the court house, such as deeds, etc.; the other services are appreciated. However, I feel that if, for instance, a buyer and seller of land (or family's transfers, etc.) want to "seal" the deal, what better place? In actuality, there are few needs for notarization, other than the very ones that are not offered.
