Two Montgomery County Public Schools Bus Drivers Bring Home State Honors Print E-mail
EverythingNRV

Montgomery County Public Schools was honored to have two bus drivers bring home trophies from the Virginia School Bus Road-e-o competition.

Josh Simpkins, a 21-year veteran school bus driver and driver trainer, was the first place winner in the special needs bus competition, competing against 12 other drivers from across the state. Simpkins has also competed at the state and national levels in the past. Last year, he won the Virginia competition in the special needs bus competition and tied for third place at the national event. In 2004 and 2005, Simpkins was the first place winner for the transit class bus at the state and national competitions.

Another Montgomery County bus driver, Kathleen Graham, placed third at the state level in the transit class competition. Graham has driven a school bus for Montgomery County for 12 years and also serves as a driver trainer. She competed against 15 other drivers and this was her first state competition.

The “Road-e-o” is a safety competition for drivers to showcase their driving skills and driver best practices. It helps improve driving skills, alertness and gives drivers a more thorough understanding of the school bus driving profession. The competition starts at the local level. School bus drivers compete in one of three competition classes – the 65 passenger conventional bus category, the 78 passenger transit style bus category, or a 35 passenger special needs bus category. The special needs competition also includes a test on proficiency with students who must be transported in wheel chairs.

All drivers must take a written knowledge test which includes school bus laws, rules and regulations in addition to a portion that tests their knowledge of the proper procedures for their daily pre-trip bus inspection. They must also score well in a behind-the-wheel event using cones set up on a prescribed course to test their level of skill and proficiency with the bus. The winner of each competition is eligible to compete at the state event. The first and second place winners at the state competition are eligible to compete at the national road-e-o which will be held on July 19 and 20, 2008. Simpkins will represent Virginia in the competition.
