A 26-year-old Blacksburg man and his 18-year-old girlfriend are behind bars following a home-invasion robbery, which started in Carroll County and ended in Wythe County.
Donnell Edward Callahan of Blacksburg and Korie Leigh Hodges of Fries are both being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond. Both Callahan and Hodges are facing 21 charges of grand larceny, breaking and entering in the nighttime to commit an armed robbery, armed robbery, abduction (for allegedly holding Newman down), malicious wounding and burglary. Callahan is also facing additional charges of one count of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, felony eluding, carrying a concealed weapon, destruction of property, driving while suspended and two counts of reckless driving. According to Carroll County Sheriff Warren Manning, the pair allegedly broke into the home of James Andrew Newman, who resided on Cherry Lane in Ivanhoe, and stole 21 guns. The victim was pistol-whipped and held down by Callahan, while Hodges removed the guns, which were mainly rifles, from the residence. According to the sheriff, the pair entered the residence at night, while Newman was asleep in his bed and began to attack him. Although the victim could note recognize who his attackers were, he was able to report to police that they had left in a white Ford Probe. Sheriff Manning noted that the female suspect, Hodges, was related to the victim. Newman did received medical treatment from his injuries. At around 3:30 a.m., Virginia State Trooper S.M. Cochran spotted the suspect’s vehicle in Carroll County and initiated a pursuit. The chase, which lasted for about 10 minutes, ended when the suspects hit another vehicle and wrecked at a residence on Lots Gap Road near the intersection of near its intersection with Pres Jackson Road in Wythe County. At that point, both Callahan and Hodges bailed out the car and fled, according to Sgt. Mike Conroy with the Virginia State Police. Wythe County deputies than observed Hodges at about 8:30 a.m., on the Interstate 81 service road near Exit 80. Callaham was taken into custody about 90 minutes later at the Fort Chiswell Plaza along U.S. 52. When he was apprehended, he was carrying .45-caliber handgun. According to authorities, the case may be turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, since Callahan has a criminal history. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police were involved in the incident.
