U.S. Cellular And Roanoke Police Department Work Together To Keep Kids Safe PDF Print E-mail
Written by Melissa Watkins

Thousands of emergency calls are made from wireless phones each day in the U.S.  For children, knowing how to place a call from a traditional home phone and a wireless phone can literally mean the difference between life and death in a crisis. Most importantly, both children and parents should be well-informed on the protocol during different types of emergencies.

That’s why U.S. Cellular is partnering with the Roanoke Police Department and the Boys & Girls Club of Roanoke Valley to teach club members about safety during the club’s summer camp at 10:30 a.m. on June 26 at the Boys & Girls Club 9th Street Location (1714 9th Street, SE, Roanoke).

More than 65 children will learn about safety and how to dial 9-1-1 on a cell phone. In addition, U.S. Cellular has donated cellular phones and on year of service to Boys & Girls Club teachers to enable them to better communicate within the organization.  Children receive recognition after completing the program and will be designated cellular stars.

"It's all about the hard work of groups like Boys & Girls Clubs and the leaders in our community," said Michelle Neu, area sales manager for U.S. Cellular in Virginia.  "We all share the responsibility of teaching our kids safe habits and when we can bring the right people together, great things happen."

U.S. Cellular offers these training tips for parents:

· Learn important numbers first – Every child should know their home phone number, their parents’ cell phone numbers and 9-1-1.  It’s important to stress to children when and why these phone numbers are important. Give them pretend scenarios to help them learn.

· The Pretend Phone Game – Write down your phone number on a piece of paper.  Using a toy phone or your cell phone (turned off), have your child dial the number, allowing him/her to use the cheat sheet as reference.  The goal is to eventually do away with the cheat sheet and recall the numbers by memory.

· Practice makes perfect – Have your child repeat the phone numbers to you a couple of times a day.  You might make up a funny tune to go with the numbers.  Give your child “surprise” tests by having him/her repeat the numbers at various times of the day.

U.S. Cellular is the nation's sixth-largest wireless service carrier, providing wireless service to 6.2 million customers in 26 states. The Chicago-based company employs 8,700 associates and operates on a customer satisfaction strategy, meeting customer needs by providing a comprehensive range of wireless products and services, superior customer support, and a high-quality network.

US Cellular/Roanoke
written by citizen, July 07, 2008
With all due respect, where does this article come from? US Cellular is, from personal experience, not dependable; no "outgoing" zones in the Riner area (for example); "feedback"/return calls are often delayed by 2 or more days; I can prove it. Besides, Roanoke is not part of the NRV, thank goodness. The concept is admirable, but being mixed with public relations, this article is advertising, basically, for US Cellular; not newsworthy. Besides, instructions are antiquated; most cells have a one-button call number, and/or a one-button, audibly accessed call-number. Age-groupings are important; diverse training according to age.

Falling Branch STAMP's Out Bullying
Slide Show Pict

Falling Branch Elementary School students were visited by nationally-acclaimed anti-bullying representative Jay Banks, this week. He presented the students with a campaign called S.T.A.M.P., and taught them how to STAMP out the bullying at their school. Students were both entertained and educated by Banks' display, while teachers were given information throughout the program. Local celebrity and former Falling Branch student, Melissa Devore, was present. Devore is currently pursuing a pageant dream. Banks introduced Devore as a positive role model for the children to look up to.

  • Marquis de Lafayette
Lafayette was a French aristocrat most famous for his participation in the American and French revolutions. Considered a national hero in both France and the US, he is one of only six people in history to have become an Honorary Citizen of the US. Lafayette is also credited with having created the modern French flag in July 1789. He lived in retirement in France during the First Empire, but returned to the US in 1824 to attend the inaugural banquet of what university?
