The Wilderness Road Chorus, Sweet Adelines, honored Lavelva Stevens by naming her its 2008 Sweet Adeline of the year. Lavelva Stevens, Pulaski, was named the 2008 Sweet Adeline of the Year, the highest award of the Wilderness Road Chorus of Sweet Adelines.
Stevens, who has been director of the chorus since 2006, was a singer in the chorus for many years, including singing in several quartets.
“As director, Lavelva provides all the chorus members with a strong foundation in vocal production along with a flair for performance,” said Judy Tranter, president of the chorus. “She is amazingly supportive as she tries to bring all the singers together to create the ringing chords of the barbershop sound that is the spirit of Sweet Adelines.”
She came to her love of the barbershop sound from classical music training. Stevens received a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from Lenoir-Rhyne College at Hickory, NC and a Master of Sacred Music degree from Wittenberg University.
Many people have been inspired by her music because in her career as a church musician she has been music director and organist at several area churches including Christ Episcopal Church and Trinity Lutheran Church in Pulaski and Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg.
Currently, she is music minister at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville and gives private lessons in piano, organ, and vocal production. She also sells Avon.
Wilderness Road is part of Sweet Adelines, International, an education organization. It offers programs for its members to learn about singing harmony along with programs on leadership as well as how to produce shows including costuming and choreography.
Under Stevens direction, the chorus recently sang at the Pulaski Theatre fund-raising event, A Night on the Town, and, last month, presented a show held at the Pulaski Elementary School.
Women, who are 16 years if age or older, interested in learning about barbershop-style singing, are invited to come and learn about the music. Contact Dana Rooney, at 552-4349.
