A flea circus, beach sand, midway games and lots more greeted a crowd estimated to be in the thousands, which turned out Saturday afternoon for the first annual Downtown Blacksburg Summer Solstice Fest.
The crowd started arriving early, in fact, there was a good turnout for the 5K race which kicked off the activities at 8:30 a.m. “This is really neat, something different,” said Abby Maxey, a student at Virginia Tech. “I didn’t know what to expect when I got here. It’s definitely different.” The crowd was treated to a dog parade, which appeared to be a popular event, judging by the crowd watching. There were plenty of games for the children, as well as for the adults. The kids, as well as adults, enjoyed the sand located next to the cabo fish taco building. Children were observed building sand castles and playing other games in the sand. The biggest item food-wise seemed to be the sno-cone, but what do you expect on the first full day of summer, which saw temperatures hovering around the 90-degree mark. In fact, anything that was wet and cold was the big seller. There was also plenty of food, from cotton candy to items from Pee-Wee’s BBQ and Moe’s. “I need five sno-cones,” said Bobby Bowen of Blacksburg. “One is for my wife, two for the kids and two are for me,” he said laughing. There was plenty of music and dancing throughout the entire afternoon. Some of the bands included the Coastal Confessions, PanJammers and Strange James.
