Christiansburg Lions Club Holds Successful Golf Tourney Print E-mail
Neal Turner

Tuesday afternoon the Christiansburg Lions Club sponsored its first annual golf tournament. Entitled “Benefit the Blind” the tournament will provide funding for the Lions Club to assist individuals with vision care for the upcoming year.

The Lions Club annually assists individuals by providing visual exams and glasses. This has become an expensive program and is much needed in our community says Jim Kirk, Vision Care Chairman for the club.

The golf tournament was held at The Meadows Golf Course in Christiansburg. Playing the eighteen-hole course on a beautiful windy day was a field of 56 golfers taking to the course in a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Players found the course in excellent condition and the greens were perfect. The Lions Club had some 24-hole sponsors that greatly added to the success of the tournament. Each sponsor’s name was displayed on the Tee Boxes of the course and recognized at the meal following play.

The Kitts/Swain Team won the tournament with an impressive 12 under par 57. The team consisted of Gary and Brian Kitts, Robert and Bobby Swain. The father son combo was awarded the first place prize in the clubhouse following a BBQ meal served by Famous Anthony’s of Christiansburg.

Second place was the team of Ron Landreth, Dale Wade, Phillip Oliver, and A.D. Link. Third place went to the team of Ted Fleshman, Jim Kirk, Wayne Bishop, and Dennis Semones.

Lions Club members in their yellow Lions Club shirts dotted the course throughout play. Members assisted players to their carts and were on hand to monitor par three greens and other activities throughout the day.

Joe Wade club president said,” this was a great success being our first tournament and we look forward to next year”. Wade said “as we continue we hope to grow the tournament and have even more success in the future”. Neal Turner, chairman of the tournament said “this was a great field for our first tournament” our sponsors really came on board to offer us the opportunity to provide such an event”. “I already have folks telling me they will play next year and one sponsor has signed on to be the corporate sponsor for next year”.

If you are interested in helping the Lions Club or possibly becoming a member please contact Allan Burke, in-coming President at 382-1452 or any Lions Club member.
