New Owners for Local Sports Website PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rob Stadler
John Hale and Randy Thompson, local residents of the New River Valley, announced the acquisition of www.nrvsports.com. this week. Hale is a long time resident of Blacksburg.  He has been involved in broadcasting, having had his own local radio show plus an assortment of play by play broadcasts of high school athletics for many years.  Thompson has been in the media industry, having served in marketing, sales and management for radio stations and newspaper operations for the past 14 years.

"Both John and myself are excited to begin this new phase of our lives.  We decided to take over the ownership of an established property rather than try to re-create the wheel", stated Thompson.  The two new owners believe that the site has created both an audience and a vehicle for local sports enthusiasts.  Thompson added, "the previous ownership has done an excellent job of reporting the New River Valley's sporting news, recreational activities and done so while focusing on both male and female sports."

With www.nrvsports having been able to capitalize on the growth of www.everythingnrv.com, the two owners emphasized that is a model that they would like to emulate.  The news/information site has continued to gather new readers every month and the sports site hopes to continue to track in that manner.  The two sites will continue to share links, giving the New River Valley the best sources for local coverage.  According to Ron Walton of www.everythingnrv.com, "The sports site has been fun for the last couple of years, but it was time to go or grow. And as we continue to develop the news and information concept into other media and geographic areas, I needed to be able to eliminate the distractions of sites that caused us to lose focus from time to time. As much as I love sports, the simple truth is that John and Randy will do a better job because it"s their core focus, they are very experienced and they can manage it as such, giving visitors a blend of many sports activities in the NRV." Walton also acknowledged that there have also been discussions with other parties regarding the sale of other brands related to the NRV and owned by the company.

Thompson and Hale formed the partnership in part because of their varying pasts.  Hale's broadcasting base and Thompson's marketing experience will allow for continued growth of the site.  "With the exception of this site, the New River Valley's athletic events and competitors don't receive the notoriety that they deserve", according to Thompson.  "As is the case in many smaller communities, the area patrons are strong advocates of the local schools and the future that the involved students will have on our ever-growing area".

The site will add an even more enhanced emphasis on video, audio and photography as well as continue with the written content established.  "Many people say that the internet is the future.  As George Allen, famed coach of the Washington Redskins once stated, the future is now ", Thompson observed.  In addition to the role of high school sports, the two owners will continue to focus on Virginia Tech and Radford University athletics.  They will add a stronger presence on other sports, such as bowling, racing, hunting and fishing.  The owners stated that will also concentrate on developing a variety of new features for the site that will designed for readers of all ages and interest.

The months of July and August will continue to be a time when the site will be adding  new ways to become as interactive as possible.  The owners are asking for input from its audience.  They are looking for contributions from local writers and photographers.  They urge anyone with ideas on the site to e-mail them at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
