Don And The Deltones Please A Large Crowd PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry Middleton

Don and the Deltones, a music-group icon of Christiansburg, pleased a crowd of about 500 fans as Saturday's Christiansburg's Grand-Reopening closing act.

The early evening rain was not a deterrent; many fans, when asked about the affects of the diverse weather, said "but it's Don and the Deltones, and we don't care about the rain.  We wanted to see them and hear them."  Many fans had attended H.S. with some members of the group, or know well-known musician Don Brown, founder of Don and the Deltones.

Singer Allen Johnson, Saxophonist Ricky Reed, and keyboardist "Chucky" Anderson have been "anchors" of the band for decades.

Diverse age-groups danced to "Mustang Sally" and other retro-hits; Don's group can play most all popular beach, early rock, and other music.

This reporter remembers visiting Don Brown and Don and the Deltones in 1965, when they practiced in a basement of Don's childhood house in Apple Acres, near the NRV Mall.  At the time of emergence of "garage-bands," they were above-par; their presence was requested immediately; their following has continued for nearly 50 years.

Don and the Deltones admirers continue to appreciate and support them.  It was a treat to see so many community members from the past, as well as younger children, dance to and appreciate their melodic delights.
