Rain Dampens Annual Juneteenth Celebration Print E-mail
Larry Middleton

The Eighth Annual JUNETEENTH event was held at the Rosa Peters Park on Saturday.  The Montgomery County, Radford City, and Floyd NAACP sponsored the event, along with the Progressive Men's Club.

Good food, music, songs by soloist Roxanne Beamer, poetry readings about Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman, art and essay displays, and community service organizations offerings made the day successful; proceeds go to the NAACP Youth Council.  The Council sponsors several events for area youths that enrich their lives, and benefit the community.

The AKA Sorority of Virginia Tech assisted area debutantes' activities, including face-painting and special photographs that were printed and sold on-site.

Christiansburg Ruritans and NAACP voter registration booth personnel assisted folks with information about many important issues. The Progressive Men's Club fish fry is always a favorite; they did not let anyone down. All enjoyed the fine cuisine.

Although JUNETEENTH ended early, at 3 p.m., due to storms, Deborah Travis said that about 150 folks visited.  "We are looking forward to our continuance of pro-active Youth Council efforts that really help our kids a lot," said Travis.
