Poor Mountain Fire Continues To Spread Print E-mail
Larry Middleton

As the sun began to set over the ridges of Elliston, heavy smoke obscured the view, due to the Poor Mountain Fire. The fire in Montgomery County has spread to 150-plus acres, despite firefighter's efforts and helicopter water-drops throughout the day on Thursday.

The crew of about 50 volunteers and State Wardens are going to use heavy-equipment and water to try to contain the fire on Friday, although it is predicted to burn for several days, according to State Warden David Cooper.  Cooper is the coordinator for the effort.

The American Red Cross will assist the Elliston Ladies Auxiliary starting today, providing three meals daily for personnel.  The Auxiliary has provided food, beverages, and moral support to the fighters since the growing fire began.

The extremely desolate area poses problematic schematics regarding outlays of equipment and manpower. The safety of fighters is always in the forefront, according to Charlie Yopp, State Warden for Montgomery and Floyd Counties. One firefighter said that "at least the rattle snakes warn you; I saw four today.  But the copperheads are very quite."

A fire-line in the Dark Run area is one of Friday's main targets.  However, an equipment operator said that it was really difficult to maneuver in the narrow rock-laden pathways that are just above high cliffs.  Thus far, individual fire-fighter teams have manually fought the spreading fire.

Former Senator Madison Mayre visited the control-center at Eastern Montgomery H.S., Thursday night.  He encouraged the crews, and worked with Cooper, using topographical maps to assist in information regarding planning.
