Two candidates are now in the running in the upcoming Special Election in November to fill the open District A seat on the Montgomery County School Board.
Current school board member Phyllis Albritton and B. Amy Davey Mauldon both filed their petitions to be added to the ballot late Tuesday afternoon. The deadline to file was at 7 p.m. that evening. No one else had filed to enter the race. According to Montgomery County Registrar Randy Wertz, each candidate must receive 125 signatures supporting their candidacy. Albritton, of Blacksburg, was appointed to the District A seat last September after Amy Lythgoe resigned from the board for family reasons. Mauldon, who applied for the appointment last year, is the former PTO president at Margaret Beeks Elementary School and also resides in Blacksburg. According to Wertz, who ever wins the November Special For the District A seat will be required to run for re-election in 2009 in order to keep the position. The original District A seat, which was held by Lythgoe before her resignation, was scheduled to expire in 2009.
