Flame Of Hope Torch Run PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry Middleton

The Flame of Hope, sponsored by the Law Enforcement Run for the Summer Special Olympics, was carried by local police officers Tuesday throughout Christiansburg. About 25 runners enjoyed the seven-mile run from Christiansburg High School to Roanoke Street.

Captain Barry O'Rourke, Christiansburg Police Department, said that he always looks forward to the annual event. "We must remember that we are an inclusive community; we need to support all of our citizens and their efforts."

He said that the Christiansburg Police Department has participated since the event's conception, several years ago.  "I'm glad that my military reserve physical test-runs were completed recently.  They only require a two-mile run; it felt good to run the full seven-mile leg of the Torch Run. I really enjoyed it, especially knowing that it would benefit many people."

Steve Huppert said he always looks forward to the run; he has run the trek for four years.  T-shirt sales, sponsorships, and other events help bolster coffers.  He said that the fund-raiser run from Bristol, VA, to Richmond, VA, was part of a nationwide activity.  "Passing the torch" is segmented throughout Virginia and other states, as well as in other countries.

According to the Special Olympics website, last year's run and related events included 85 thousand officers, and raised more than $30 million dollars for the organization.
