Margaret Duncan is leaving the Southwest Virginia Governor's School, after a 17-year stint as Director. Before leaving, however, a gracious crowd of current and former students, their families, faculty, and local dignitaries honored her with a reception Saturday afternoon.
A long line made it evident that everyone wanted to speak with Ms. Duncan (and/or hug her); the two-hour reception lingered for much longer. Ashley Neal, Class of 2000, a May 26th, 2008, graduate of the Yale School of Medicine, said that Ms. Duncan was "invaluable for both academic and emotional support; she was always readily accessible to all. She has been the "glue" that has held this school together. Her support of individual career planning and working with the faculty to meet students' needs was essential." The Neal family has had two other daughters graduate from the school; one is becoming an attorney, and the other is specializing in International studies abroad. Students, current and former, were asked to mention a few tidbits about their experiences: Ms. Duncan's fantastic jewelry; Selu; biscuits on workdays; "the" iguana; and more "insider" info. Costumed beings being spotted on campus was also mentioned as a legacy of the school. A wicker basket that was used to hold notes to Ms. Duncan was overflowing within a few minutes. She was very happy with a sketch of one of her pets that was presented to her. She posed with her niece, Andrea Trent, with a vase of flowers that was given to her by her admirers. Ms. Duncan said, "I am overwhelmed. I don't think anyone thought this large crowd would come today. I never thought I would see so many graduates with their children, let alone those still in school. I am just thrilled." After coming from Bedford County to the Governor's School, Ms. Duncan's legacy will be difficult to match. "I wish the best of everything to my replacement; they are going to enjoy the wonderful students and staff, as much as I have." Ms. Duncan plans to further her education at the University of California, Davis, along with her daughter. "I believe in continuing one's education; we are all life-long learners!" Ms. Duncan's enthusiasm and caring for others was evident. Apparently, everyone she has worked with admires her. Click here to see additional photos of this event in our photo gallery.
