NRV Women's Resource Center Holds Benefit Concert PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry Middleton

The Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley held its 30th Anniversary Benefit Concert Friday night, at the Inn of Virginia Tech.

Pat Brown, Executive Director, greeted the crowd of more than 250 people.  She said she was "honored for the community to support and recognize the importance of the Center's purpose."  The WRC provides 24-hour support, including housing, counseling, and other needs of women and children that have experienced domestic and other violence and abuse.  It is he oldest organization in the State of Virginia that provides comprehensive services.

WRC volunteers, Kim Rogers, Tina Krager, and Amy Jones coordinated the event. Rogers said that, "We are celebrating a 30th-year anniversary, but we also want to remind folks of women's issues."

According to Brown, Saffire (The Uppity Blues Women) Band, was hired to use their humor and "The Blues" to get the point across; that women have many issues that need to be addressed.  Saffire did not let the crowd down; groups broke-out of their seats in a spontaneous fashion and danced to nearly midnight.

The Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley (wrcnrv.org) "is always in need of resources, from volunteers to contributions, and we hope the community's support will grow.  It's a great thing that many need; the themes of Saffire reflect what we experience in much more serious, real-life situations," said Brown.
