David Grimes

A Christiansburg man was shot in the leg Friday night by a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy, after the officer attempted to serve an arrest warrant on the man.

According to police, a deputy, who has yet to be identified, was attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Donald Edward Lovern, 43, for forcible sodomy. It’s alleged that Lovern approached the deputy with a knife and the suspect was shot in the leg by the deputy.

Lovern was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The deputy was not injured.

The incident took place in the Red Oak Mobile Home Park, which is located in the Town of Christiansburg, at 10:50 p.m.

According to Capt. Barry O’Rourke of the Christiansburg Police Department, his department has been requested by Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Whitt to investigate the shooting.
