The U.S. Air Force’s 20th Special Operations Squadron from the 1st Special Operations Wing will be conducting training in the Roanoke vicinity now through June 5.
The training, which will take place in the Appalachian Mountains within western Virginia and southern West Virginia, involves four MH-53 PAVELOW aircraft. This training will take place during the day and throughout the night. The unique location, terrain and facilities offered by the area surrounding Roanoke provides these training participants with highly realistic training and sharpens their abilities to combat enemies in mountainous regions abroad. As part of on-going force modernization initiatives, the MH-53 will be retired from service on September 30 of this year. However, they are and will remain heavily engaged in combat operations in support of the Global War on Terrorism until the end, with their final flight being flown in combat. During the exercise, residents may see and/or hear several MH-53 PAVELOW aircraft flying at low to medium altitudes performing maneuvers. Photo courtesy of U.S. Air Force
