Updated: Floyd County Man Killed By Animal Control Officer Print E-mail
David Grimes

More details are being released concerning Thursday night's fatal shooting of a Floyd County man in the Willis section of the county.

According to police, Garland Nester, an animal control officer for Floyd County was attempting to put down one of his cows and when he shot the cow, he also shot Paul Belcher, 75, of Meadows of Dan. Belcher died at the scene.

According to a press release from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office Friday morning, the sheriff’s office received a call at 7:12 p.m. Thursday night of a man being shot in the 4800 block of Conner Grove Road.

Since the shooting involved a Floyd County employee, the investigation was turned over to the State Police. Franklin County Commonwealth Attorney Cliff Hapgood was also appointed Friday by a judge as special prosecuter for the case.

The Virginia State Police is handling the investigation, which is still ongoing. No charges have yet to be filed.

EverythingNRV.com is following this developing story and will post further details as they become available.
