Fire up the grill and pull out the swim wear, the unofficial start of summer takes place and there will be plenty to do around the New River Valley this Memorial Day weekend.
With the soaring price of gas, many of us will opt to stay close to home during this long weekend. EverythingNRV.com will give you some ideas to enjoy some of the great weather that the area forecasts are calling for. We will start our road trip in Pulaski County Saturday morning. First, you will need clean windows to see all the sites around the area, so you may want to stop by Hardee’s in Fairlawn and support the Relay for Life car wash that will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Also, while you are there you can grab breakfast. There will also be a tractor-pull at the Ruritan National grounds in Newbern starting at 11 a.m. This event is sponsored by the NRV Antique Tractor Club. UAW Local 2069 Veterans Committee will hold its 17th Annual Ride for Freedom Memorial Ceremony on Saturday. The activities get underway at 8 a.m. on the front lawn of the Union Hall, which is located across from the Volvo plant. Looking for some homegrown produce? You will be able to find plenty of locally produced items at the Farmer’s Market in Blacksburg, Narrows, Radford and Pulaski. On Sunday, after attending the church of your choice, check out the Blacksburg Backyard Bazaar from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Blacksburg Farmers Market. On Monday, its time to salute and pay tribute to our Veterans. There will be several special ceremonies around the NRV. Starting at 11 a.m. at Radford’s Bisset Park, the annual Memorial Day services will be held at the gazebo. There will be posting of the Colors, a band rendition of “Amazing Grace”, as well as a 21-gun salute. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a Veteran’s program at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, This event is being sponsored by the American Legion Post 59 and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 5311. So enjoy the weekend and remember these two important reminders from the area law enforcement agencies, “Don’t Drink and Drive” and “Click It or Ticket.” Photo by David Grimes
