Auburn High School Senior Class Honored PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry Middleton

Auburn High School Class of 2008 Seniors were honored with a special Awards Ceremony Wednesday night in Riner. Brittany McElwee, Senior Class President, gave the opening remarks. Eagle Pride sponsored a reception following the event, giving everyone an opportunity to rekindle friendships and to celebrate their accomplishments.

About 100 AHS seniors, dressed in full regalia, enjoyed the company of distinguished award presenters, friends, relatives, parents and guardians.  Smiles were abundant throughout the AHS auditorium. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian were present, but no one knows the honorees' names yet.  A close GPA situation will result in the students and others finding out at the June 6th graduation ceremony.

Seniors received tens of thousands of dollars of scholarships and other awards that were given by a myriad of community groups and U.S. Military representatives. Other special recognitions were presented by school personnel, including Tim Baynum, AHS Assistant Principal.  He said that "I was a Freshman at AHS when they entered the 9th-grade, as it was my first year here; I am glad to honor them during our fourth year together.  They are a great group of students."

The gleeful seniors exemplified a part of Americana that some folks may not often think about.  The AHS Class of 2008 are happy, achievement-driven teens that have excelled in our great USA society.  Their teachers, families, and others have led them, but they have been the ones that had to "take the ball and run with it."

Nick Gunther, AHS Class of 2008, smiled as he said that "this is it..it's my last night; I've earned exam exemption, and, except for our graduation on June 6th, I'm free!" Nick said that he had really enjoyed his years in Auburn schools since he was in elementary school. Senior Jacob Morgan lamented that he hoped his AHS rising-freshman brother, Joe, will learn as much and have as much fun as he has had.  They share common interests in guitar and band performances, and hope to excel with their music endeavors.

As darkness began to fall over the Riner landscape, with horizons silhouetted by a mixture of new homes and old silos, relevant silence returned to "downtown."  However, smiles could be "heard" for miles, as the crowd dispersed.
