Montgomery County School Board Hands Out Recognitions, Approve New Text Books PDF Print E-mail

The Montgomery County School Board handed out several recognitions and adopted new text books at its meeting Tuesday night.

Four students for the month of May and four for the Month of June were recognized as Senior of the Month. The May honorees included Ethan Bowyer (Auburn High School), Scott Davis (Blacksburg High School), Christopher Newman (Christiansburg High School) and Timothy Akers (Eastern Montgomery High School).

The June Seniors of the Month included Christine Mills (Auburn), Laurel MacMiiian (Blacksburg), Monica Hampton (Christiansburg) and Ashley Milliner (Eastern Montgomery).

Joel Hodges, a kindergarten teacher at Kipps Elementary School, was recognized for placing third in the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Blue Ridge Regional Forum Art Contest.

The Christiansburg High School Wrestling Team won recognized for winning its seventh-straight Group AA State Championship. Those team members recognized included Devin Carter and Same Rakes (State Champions); Andrew Robertson, Derek Woody and Braden Carter (Second Place); Bobby Schafer, Luke Rakes and David Cheney (State Qualifiers); Rich Eva and John Weber (Fifth Place); Jeff Meredith and Trey Dillon (Seventh Place); Shawn Quesenberry and Michael Giordano (Regional Qualifiers). The coaches included Daryl Weber, Brian Shortridge, Alvin Sheppard, Eli Garshnick, Ryan Broughman and BJ Compton.

The Blacksburg Middle School was recognized for receiving a Blue Ribbon Award from the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) for both the top choir and the top band receiving superior ratings at concert festival. The advanced band and Bel Canto choir all received superior ratings.

The Montgomery County Public Schools were recently named one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation for its school-based music education program. The music teachers and Kathy Duncan, Fine Arts Supervisor received certificates and where recognized for their dedication.

The School Board also approved the Secondary Career and Technical Education Textbooks. The textbooks were reviewed by teachers, students, parents and administrators. The following textbooks were recommended for the following programs: Cabinetmaking and Carpentry, Commercial Photography, Drafting, Family and Consumer Science, Marketing and Pre-engineering.

The School Board also approved a request to the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors to appropriate $97,385, 738 for Total School Operating and $3,772,715 for School Nutrition Fund for FY 2008-2009.
