Cruisin' Christiansburg Draws Thousands PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Grimes

A crowd of about 5,000 people strolled through Downtown Christiansburg Saturday afternoon to take part in the first annual Cruisin’ Christiansburg event, which featured more than 240 classic cars and other activities.

“This is really good for downtown,” said Christiansburg Mayor Richard Ballengee, as he strolled the downtown streets Saturday afternoon.. “Our downtown needed something like this to get the people to visit and shop our downtown area and I think it worked very well.”

Just about every vintage vehicle you could think of lined Main Street and some of the side streets. Owners of the vehicles spent the afternoon and evening bragging about their cars to the curious onlookers, who wanted to know more about their vehicle.

“Dad, these are some awesome cars,” said six-year-old William Harper, as he and his father looked at the cars.

In addition to the many cars on display, there was some great music performed throughout the afternoon by the Due South Band, as well as some great BBQ served up by Due South.

One of the activities that drew a large amount of onlookers was the Montgomery County Public Schools Team 401, which was showing off their robot to public. The robot was built by the MCPS students in about six months and has competed along with other schools throughout the Eastern United States.

Several organizations and businesses also participated in the affair, promoting their purpose. Some of those included the Montgomery Museum, Literacy Volunteers, RSVP, as well as Echostar/Dish Network and AIG Insurance.

“We wanted to re-introduce the folks to our beautiful downtown community,” said Tacy Newell-Foutz, one of the event organizers. “I am very pleased with the turnout today.”

The next Cruisin’ Christiansburg is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, and it will be part of the Grand Re-opening of Downtown Christiansburg. This event will feature Don & The Deltones, Olin Gardner, lots of children activities, as well as lot more to please everyone of any age.
