Montgomery County Hosts 9th District Democratic Nomination Convention PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry Middleton

From the far Southwestern Virginia County of Lee to Montgomery County, Southwest Virginia Democratic Party members and delegates came to the nomination meeting for the 9th Congressional District, held at Auburn High School in Riner Saturday.

U.S. Congressman Rick Boucher, incumbent, was unanimously elected as the Democratic nominee for the Fall election. After thanking the lively group, he reminded them that, while he had served for many years, that he would fervently work to continue progress for the 9th District, Virginia, and the USA.

Congressman Boucher stated that improved high-tech job opportunities, better drinking-water availability, and expanded broadband availability were just a few of his important accomplishments that he would continue to pursue. He said that bi-partisan efforts were essential for the good of all. Recent legislation that he and Senator John Warner proposed has passed the House.  Next week, the U.S. Senate is expected to endorse it, and it is likely to be signed by President Bush.  The Bill will provide for the protection of 40,000 acres of wilderness, bolstering the eco-system, while encouraging tourism.

The day included a delegate selection process that allowed delegates from all 9th District counties to compete for the honor of attending the Denver, Co., National Democratic Convention.

The Ninth District voted to send Melanie Salyer of Big Stone Gap, Rex McCarty of Gate City and Elizabeth Chitwoof of Pulaski as Clinton delegates. Terry Frye of Bristol will serve as an alternate.

Montgomery County Chairman Steve Cochran was chosen as the Obama delegate and John Diyono of Wytheville was selected as the Presidential Elector.
