Montgomery County property owners may notice something different in their real estate tax notices this spring. All real estate owners, including those whose taxes are paid by a mortgage company, will be receiving tax due notices. “Some of the tax notices mailed recently are copies – not bills -- for property owners whose real estate taxes are paid by their mortgage company. Many homeowners are refinancing their homes and we may not have their current mortgage company on record,” said Treasurer W. Richard Shelton.
If you have not yet received a real estate tax notice, contact the Treasurer’s Office before the due date of June 5 at (540) 382-5723. If you should have any questions regarding your mortgage account, please contact your mortgage holder. All real property in Montgomery County is subject to taxation, except that which is specifically exempt. Property is assessed as of Jan.1 of each year. The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors sets the tax rate. Payment is made to the Treasurer’s Office in two installments due June 5 and Dec. 5. Payment can be made in person or mailed to the Montgomery County Treasurer’s Office, 755 Roanoke Street, Suite 1B, Christiansburg, VA 24073-3171. Payment made by check also may be put in the drop off box at the Government Center. Under Virginia law, property owners who do not pay by the June 5 deadline will be subject to a penalty and interest charges even if they have not received a tax bill. The U.S. Postal Service postmark will be used to determine timeliness of mailed payments.
