Blacksburg Man Charged With Aggravated Malicious Wounding Print E-mail
David Grimes

A Blacksburg man has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding following a stabbing which took place earlier this month.

Kelvin Lewis Holmes, 41, of Blacksburg was charged with one count of aggravated malicious wounding as a result of another man being stabbed during a fight, which took place in the 400 block of Fairfax Road in Blacksburg on May 4, 2008.

According to search warrant filed Wednesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court, Blacksburg police requested a DNA sample from Holmes, who is being held at the Montgomery County Jail.

According to the search warrant, it’s alleged that an altercation took place in front of Building 10, 401 Fairfax Road, which is the Lantern Ridge Apartments. The victim, Desmond O’Neal Smith, and several witnesses positively identified Mr. Holmes as the person responsible for stabbing and slashing Mr. Smith several times with a knife during the fight.

It’s further alleged, that Mr. Holmes was located in a nearby apartment a short time later wearing a shirt covered in what appeared to be blood. Mr. Holmes had a swollen eye freshly bleeding, consistent with wounds incurred in a fight. Mr. Holmes’ son, Charles Hypes, also wearing a shirt that was stained with what appeared to be fresh blood stains, admitted to being at the scene of the fight and confirmed his father had been in a fight.

The DNA request was needed by the lab for comparison to the stains on the seized shirts, according to the search warrant.

Holmes was scheduled for a bond hearing this past Wednesday. However, the hearing was continued, He is scheduled to be back in Montgomery County General District on July 10, 2008.

The victim, Smith, was taken to the hospital the night of the fight and was treated and released.
