During the month of April, two local Girl Scouts, Laiken Rakes and her younger sister Idara Rakes made SWAPS in their spare time to hand out at the Relay for Life event to be held at Christiansburg High School tonight and Saturday.
These girls worked very hard, and with mom’s assistance, made 200 key chains. The key chains were made up of light purple beads representing cancer in general and one dark green bead in the center representing Girl Scouts. The decision to make the beads was made after the idea was presented at a local service unit meeting to all the Christiansburg Girl Scout leaders. When their mother returned home and was talking about the discussion she had with other leaders, Laiken instantly said “key chains, we can do key chains”. These girls got started right away making the key chains and before they knew it, 200 had been made. The girls’ mother said it was a very big task for her girls, ages nine and five, however she is very excited that they followed through with it, and made as many as they did. Laiken and Idara are constantly asking questions concerning cancer and why everyone is getting this disease and why a lot of people die too. Relay for Life allows us an opportunity to remember those who have lost their battle but also the survivors whose were able to fight this deadly disease. Laiken said she will continue to pray for a cure. For those who aren’t familiar with the term SWAPS it is a Girl Scouting acronym for “Special Whatchamacallit Affectionately Pinned Somewhere”.
