Thirty-three students from Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd and Giles Counties, along with the City of Radford were among the 44 students who were announced as Outstanding Students in a Curriculum/Subject Area at the recent President’s Awards Ceremony at New River Community College in Dublin.

Thirty students from Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd and Giles Counties were among the 44 students who were announced as Outstanding Students in a Curriculum/Subject Area at the recent President’s Awards Ceremony at New River Community College in Dublin.

Montgomery County led the way with 16 students being named. They included Joshua A. Barnett, Christiansburg, Architecture Specialization; Kimberly D. Bramlett, Christiansburg, Liberal Arts; Henry H. Buckland, Christiansburg, Human Services; Daniel B. Burgess, Blacksburg, Information Technology; Emily A. Gabrysch, Blacksburg, IT Computer Graphics and Web Design Specialization; Christopher D. Hawks, Blacksburg, Electronics Technology and Instrumentation & Control Automation Technology; Steven R. Lester, Christiansburg, Electrical Engineering Technology; Andrea M. Litton, Christiansburg, Paralegal Administrative Support Specialization; Pamela V. Lydon, Riner, IT Network & Technical Support Specialization; Brandy M. McAlexander, Riner, Medical Administrative Support Specialization; Heidi H. Phillips, Christiansburg, IST Help Desk Support Specialization; Ervin Plumbi, Blacksburg, Architecture Specialization; Anne C. Sheppard, Blacksburg, IT Network & Technical Support Specialization; Michael J. Speer, Blacksburg, Engineering; Aaron J. Tucker, Blacksburg, Information Technology; and Lauren M. Wolfe, Christiansburg, Business Administration.

Pulaski County followed with eight residents being recognized. They are: Adam J. Carr, Pulaski, Electronics Technology; Kayla M. Gravley, Parrott, Marketing; Stephen M. Harris, Draper, 3D Animation Specialization; Tony L. Jennelle, Pulaski, Welding; Rick E. Riddle, Dublin, Police Science; Kayla C. Taylor, Allisonia, Early Childhood Development Specialization; Bonnie K. Westpfahl, Pulaski, Business Management and Alison A. Wilkins, Dublin, Nursing.

Both Floyd and Giles County finished with three students each.

Those from Floyd County included Kara R. Rogers, Riner, Graphic Design Communications Specialization; Dorothy J. Skiles, Pilot, Administrative Support Technology and Michael W. Walker, Jr., Floyd, IT Networking Specialization.

While Giles County residents were Lauren J. Robertson, IT Game Design Specialization and General Studies; Samantha S. Talbert, Pearisburg, Computer Aided Drafting and Design; and Heather S. Vittum, Pembroke, Paralegal Studies.

The City of Radford had three people named. They included Jason C. Smith,Computer Aided Drafting ande Design and FleurinV. Azo, English and Yeneakil G. Alemayhu, English.

The awards are determined by the faculty in the various programs at the college. All students receiving the Outstanding Student in a Curriculum award have completed requirements for an associate degree, certificate or diploma and are eligible to participate in the college’s commencement ceremony tonight,  May 15.

SCC Approves Reduced Apco Rate Increase; Orders Refunds To Customers With Interest

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) announced on Monday, Nov. 17, that it has approved a reduced base rate increase for Appalachian Power Company (APCo) that will allow the company to increase its annual operating revenue by $168 million. The amount is $40 million less than what the company requested and has been charging customers on an interim basis since late October.

 
Brightest Lights' Time to Shine
A group of area non-profit organizations have teamed up with the Virginia Tech German Club Alumni Foundation (GCAF) to announce the “Leading Lights: Neighbors Honoring Neighbors” recognition awards for volunteers in our community. Leading Lights seeks to recognize volunteers in the NRV from all sectors who are making community-changing impacts and serving as a model to inspire others.  The group will honor award-winners by donating $1,000 to the non-profit of their choice.

Poised to celebrate fifty years in business is Harvey’s GM, Main Street Radford’s Business of the month November.  Since 1959, Harvey’s GM Inc. has been providing Radford and regional shoppers with a large variety of choices from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Pontiac as well as a wide selection of used vehicles.

 
Schultz-Creehan LLC United Way Kickoff Campaign A Success

Schultz-Creehan, LLC, a first time participant in the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd (UWMRF), has determined to make a positive impact on the community by taking an active role as a member of the United Way’s “First and Goal” program.  “First and Goal” is a network of small businesses selected for their strong leadership to inspire other local companies to get involved in the community.

 
Luna Innovations Receives Virginia Chamber of Commerce Torchbearer Award
Luna Innovations Incorporated, a company focusing on sensing & instrumentation and nanotechnology, was acknowledged by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce with a Torchbearer Award for the Western Region at a gala held in Richmond, Va., on Oct. 29. The awards, presented by Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling along with Bernie Niemeier, Publisher of Virginia Business magazine, and Mike Daniels, Chairman of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, honor businesses whose products, services and management practices have boosted Virginia’s progress and success in recent years.
