Montgomery County Relay For Life Starts Friday Evening PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Grimes

“Under The Stars, Survivors Shine Brightly”, that’s the theme for this year’s Montgomery County Relay for Life, which starts at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the Christiansburg High School football field.

“We are really excited about this year’s event, said Jaime Allen, public relations chairman for this year’s event. “We hope the weather will cooperate with us.”

Weather forecasts have predicted that there may be showers in the area Friday.

“If it rains, the show still goes on,” said Allen. “It has rained on us a many of times.”

The event starts at 6 p.m. Friday with the survivor walk and will conclude at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning with closing ceremonies.

The Montgomery County Relay for Life has set a goal of $160,000 this year and as of late Thursday; they had already raised just over $95,000.

Last year’s event raised featured 38 teams and about $125,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Some other goals set for this year is to have 50 teams and they have 43 thus far.

So far, the top five teams in money raised include Holy Spirit Catholic Church, VT Boxers, Kipps Relay Roos, Long and Foster and FNB Corporation.

As of Thursday afternoon, 654 participants have signed up for this year’s event. The top five individual money raisers thus far, include Janice Huppert, Janice Wedwick, Joyce Gezymalla, Rhonda Akers and Kim Wade.

As for the three top companies, Target leads the way, followed by HCA Healthcare and Best Buy in raising money.

Relay For Life®, the American Cancer Society's signature event, is a fun-filled overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. At Relay, people from within the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to fight back against this disease. Relay participants help raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. During Relay For Life ® events, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. The events are held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps. Through the survivors' lap and the luminaria ceremony, we honor the people who have faced cancer first hand, and we remember those who have been lost to this disease.
