Come Friday, 1,100 employees at the New River Valley Volvo Plant will be unemployed, as the previously announced layoffs will start taking place. “The layoffs will take place starting Friday,” said Volvo spokesman Jim McNamara in a phone interview Monday afternoon with EverythingNRV.com.
When asked how many would be laid off on Friday, he answered, “I have no additional information.” In a April press release, Volvo announced that it would be lying off 1,100 workers and switch to a single shift at its New River Valley Plant in May. The plant was to lay off 650 workers last November. However the recent strike at the Dublin plant delayed the planned layoffs. “Because of downturns in the economy and a lack of orders, the size of the layoffs increased,” McNamara said in the April press release. The workers being laid off will be those who had been hired between late 1997 and this year, according to UAW local 2069 President Lester Hancock. Currently about 2,900 people work at the New River Valley Plant. EverythingNRV.com will continue to follow this developing story and will post any new details as it becomes available.
