U.S. Cellular & Roanoke Boys & Girls Club Members Make Mother's Day Cards |

May 11 marked the 100th anniversary of the first official Mother’s Day celebration in the United States. The holiday was started by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia who called for a day to honor all mothers. In order to celebrate this time honored tradition, U.S. Cellular associates from the Roanoke business office and U.S. Cellular retail locations in the area organized a card making event at the local Boys and Girls Club on 9th Street in Roanoke.
Forty five children made cards on May 8 for their mothers, grandmothers and other significant women in their lives. U.S. Cellular supplied the art supplies, glitter, stickers, paper and some helping hands. “We were thrilled work with area children to help them honor their Mothers,” said Michelle Neu, U.S. Cellular director of sales in the Mid-Atlantic. “This was especially important as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day.” U.S. Cellular has been serving Roanoke residents since 1991 and employs more than 123 associates in the area. The company operates a local business office and 4 company and agent locations in the city. U.S. Cellular’s investment in the area goes beyond its wireless products and services and extends directly to the community. This past year, U.S. Cellular gave $48,000 in support of Roanoke area non-profit organizations serving economically disadvantaged youth, family and seniors through support of the Trust House (homeless shelter), The Boys and Girls Club of Roanoke Valley and the United Way. In addition, U.S. Cellular has held calling programs at the Salem Veteran’s Center and has refurbished area playgrounds and daycare centers throughout the area with TAP (Total Action against Poverty). U.S. Cellular is the nation’s sixth-largest wireless service carrier, providing wireless service to six million customers in 26 states. The Chicago-based company employs 8,000 associates and operates on a customer satisfaction strategy, meeting customer needs by providing a comprehensive range of wireless products and services, superior customer support and a high-quality national network.
