At 4 p.m. this afternoon, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will host the 4th Annual Police Memorial Ceremony on the front lawn of the Montgomery County Courthouse in downtown Christiansburg. Montgomery County Commonwealth Attorney Bradley Finch will be the featured speaker. In the event of rain, the cermonies will be moved to the Montgomery County Government Center at 755 Roanoke Street in Christiansburg. We will be honoring those officers who lost their lives during 2007 and remembering those from Montgomery County who have also paid the ultimate sacrifice: Officer Terry Griffith, Officer Scott Hylton, Security Guard Derrick McFarland, and Corporal Eric Sutphin. The public is invited. In 2007, 187 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty nation-wide, and to date this year, 31 officers have died. This event is being held in conjunction with National Police Officer Memorial Week, May 11-17, 2008. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.
