Large Crowd Partakes In Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club Fish Fry PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Grimes

There was an outdoor fish fry, a little jazz music, and plenty of sunshine on a nice spring evening, as the Mount Tabor Ruritan Club held its first Fish Fry of 2008 Saturday at Slusser's Chapel. And judging by the size of the early arriving crowd, they were more than ready to chow down.

The all-you-could-eat deal was advertised to start at 5 p.m. However, by 4:30 p.m. the serving line was forming and within 30 minutes, it stood 100-deep.

“I been waiting since last year for this,” said Robert Stevens, who drove down from Narrows. “I have been coming here for about 10 years and its some of the best eating around.”

“The Fish Fry, along with the Apple Butter making in the fall are our only two fund raisers for the year,” said Tom Meacham, one of the co-chairs for the fish fry. “We have been doing the fish fries for more than 20 years.”

The ruritan club, which does five fish fries each year, averages about 440 meals sold per event.

“We prepare for 500,” said Allen Bame, the other fish fry co-chair. “What we have left over after each dinner, we take and donate it to the Blacksburg Food Pantry. So nothing goes to waste.

As the evening wore on, the crowd continued to grow by the numbers. In fact, all the available picnic tables were full, so people resorted to sitting in the grass field and even eating in their cars.

“We may have a sell-out today,” said Bame. “We have gone through 200 pounds of fish in just the first 20 minutes.

The Blacksburg High School Jazz Ensemble was on hand and provided some great jazz tunes with your outdoor dining experience.

According to Meacham, the Mount Tabor Ruritan Club donated more than $8,000 last year to various organizations.

There are four more Fish Fries remaining, June 10, July 12, August 9 and September 13.

“We invite everyone out to enjoy some great fish and there’s plenty of good ole fellowship,” added Bame. And besides, you are supporting a worthy cause that benefits our community.”
