Warrants were served Friday afternoon on the Giles County man who shot two campers along the Appalachian Trail Tuesday night. According to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office, warrants were obtained earlier in the day for Randall Lee Smith, 57, who lives in Pearisburg. He is facing charges for two counts of attempted capital murder, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and grand larceny.
Smith, who was convicted in 1982 for killing two hikers from Maine along the Appalachian Trail in May of 1981, allegedly shot two men Tuesday night after having dinner with them in the Dismal Creek area of Giles County, just off the Appalachian Trail. Ironically, Tuesday night’s shootings occurred about two miles from the May 1981 murders. Both incidents also took place in the month of May. Smith was released from Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was taken to the magistrates office, where the warrants were served on him. He is now being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond. Anyone who may have encountered Smith or have seen anything that may be related to this case are urged to contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Office (540-921-3842) or e-mail
