One person was slightly injured following a five-vehicle chain-reaction accident this evening on I-81 southbound in Montgomery County.

According to Virginia State Trooper Ken Kozar, traffic was heavy and had slowed down. A Freightliner tractor-trailer, which was operated by Jeffrey Wayne Wolford of Austinville, was heading south at the 125.2 mile-marker when it struck a 2002 BMW, which was operated by Eric W. Walton of Blacksburg. The impact then caused a chain-reaction, in which three other vehicles were force into the rear of each other.

Walton was the only one taken to the hospital and it was believed he may had a broken hand or arm. No one else was transported.

According to Kozar, Wolford was charged with following to closely and failing to obey a highway sign.

The left lane of the interstate was closed for about an hour, according to the trooper.

Damage to the tractor-trailer was estimated at $1300, while the BMW, which had extensive rear-end damage was estimated at $9,000. The other three vehicles received minor damage.
