A Mercer County Magistrate Court certified three charges against Steven Dale Branscome to the grand jury following a preliminary hearing this morning in Princeton, WV.
Branscome, was originally charged with wanton endangerment, malicious wounding of a police officer, grand larceny and burglary following the shooting of Virginia State Trooper Richard Hughes on March 28. In the hearing this morning, two of the three charges were reduced. The wanton endangerment charge was certified, the charge of malicious wounding to a police officer was reduced to malicious wounding and sent to the grand jury, because the original charge only applies to West Virginia police officers, the burglary charge was also certified, while the grand larceny charge was reduced to petit larceny, after the prosecution failed to prove the value of the pickup truck he had stolen near Kellysville, WV. Branscome is also facing numerous charges in Virginia and North Carolina. After being on the run for more than a week, the Floyd County man was eventually caught at a hotel in New Boston, Texas on April 6. U.S. Marshals used a high-tech tracking device to capture Branscome.
