If you were an incumbent, Tuesday wasn’t your day. Two of the three incumbents in Blacksburg’s Town Council race lost their seat, while one lost his in Christiansburg. Elsewhere across the New River Valley, there were no real big surprises in the local races.
In Blacksburg, newcomer Leslie Hager Smith garnered the most votes of any of the five candidates running. Hager-Smith, who is the director of the Downtown Blacksburg Merchants Association received 1,175 votes. Incumbent Don Langrehr retained his seat on council by receiving 1,100 votes. Another newcomer to town council will be Derek S. Myers who received 984 votes. Both incumbent Paul Lancaster and Mary Holliman were defeated as they received 940 and 713 votes, respectively. There were 25 write-in votes. Of the 14,661 registered voters in the Town of Blacksburg only 1,827 turned out to vote Tuesday for 12.46 percent. Christiansburg In Christiansburg, there will be two new faces on town council and one familiar face. Incumbent Mike Barber retained his seat with 857 votes. Newcomers, Henry Showalter and James “Jim” VanHoozier will be joining Barber. Showalter earned 856 votes and VanHoozier received 779 votes. Incumbent Steve Huppert will not be returning as he only garnered 738 votes. Sam Bishop and Bill Chafin received 623 and 289 votes, respectively. There were 16 write-ins. There are 13,228 registered voters in the Town of Christiansburg and only 1,527 turned out Tuesday for a 11.54 percent. Radford In the City of Radford, incumbents R.L. Nicholson, III and Dick Harshberger retained their seats on city council with 751 and 669 votes respectively. Challenger Leslie Dean received 206 votes. On the Radford City School Board, Incumbent Alvin Alexander will return for another term as he received 596 votes. Challenger Bill Flora received 474 votes to gain the second open seat against challenger Calvin Andrews 439 votes. Dublin In Dublin, three seats on town council were open, as well as they Mayor’s seat. Only 11 votes separated the three winners. Newcomer Edith Hampton received 111 votes, while incumbents Doug Irvin, Sr., and James D. Shrewsbury received 110 and 100 votes, respectively, to take the other two seats. Incumbent Sam Gregory lost his seat on town council with just 64 votes. Benny P. Skeens, the incumbent Dublin Mayor, retained his seat. Pulaski In the Town of Pulaski, challenger Jeffrey Worrell held off two other challengers for the Mayor’s seat. Worrell received 567 votes, compared to 194 for Dean Cox and 188 for Terri Palmore. On town council, five individuals were running for the three open seats. Incumbent Joel Burchett, Jr., was the top vote getter with 674 votes. Challenger Robert Bopp and Morgan Welker took the other two seats with 635 and 488 votes, respectively. H.M. Kidd finished fourth with 404 votes and Glenn Baublitz received 348 votes Glen Lyn In the Town of Glen Lyn, Incumbent Mayor T. Rick Ould, Jr., retained his seat for another term.
For town council, four people ran for the five open seats. Incumbent Nila Spencer led the way with 17votes. Incumbent Rickey Crawford had 14 votes, followed by challenger Leanne Barley with 12 and incumbent Donita Spangler received 10 votes. There were no write-ins.
Rich Creek In the Town of Rich Creek, Mary Jo Anderson received 32 votes to win over Stuart Helm, who received 29 votes.
