New River Valley Driving School, Inc. is proud to present Shattered Dreams, a mock DUI crash drama on Friday, May 2nd at 1 p.m., rain or shine, at the Christiansburg High School Football Stadium.
More teenagers and young adults die in traffic crashes than from any other cause. Alcohol and seat belt non-use are major factors. In the 15-24 age group, nearly half of all fatalities are alcohol related. In attempt to raise awareness of the negative consequences of impaired driving, we will present Shattered Dreams to the sophomore, junior and senior students of Christiansburg High School, with students from Blacksburg and Auburn High School also attending. The drama is sponsored by New River Valley Driving School along with Christiansburg Rescue Squad, junior class sponsor-Eileen Jackson, SADD and their sponsors Amy Southwick and Gayle Shlosser. The event will be open to the public. With the Shattered Dreams drama we hope to make a sobering impact on the decisions drivers will make to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. With the upcoming graduation and summer seasons, this is a prime time to remind students and parents of the dangers of under age drinking and driving. The mock DUI Crash is an accurate re-enactment to drive the message home and offer a choice. This event is a collaborative effort from the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, Christiansburg Police Department, Christiansburg Fire Department, Virginia State Police, Carilion LifeGuard 11, Horne’s Funeral Services, Harmon’s Service Center and SADD members. Media Partners WSPK 107.1, Hot 100 and the Bear 103.5 radio stations will promote this event. Scott Stevens from WPSK will narrate Shattered Dreams. Don Walker from Hot 100 and Joe Johnson from Bear 103.5 will provide remote broadcast. Programs similar to this one are demonstrated throughout the U.S. in hopes of deterring underage drinking and driving. The unique difference in this presentation is the participation of the Junior Emergency Rescue Personnel and the accuracy of the crash. The Christiansburg Junior Rescue Members will be working the crash under adult rescue supervision. The junior members are teenagers, certified as EMT’s and trained to save lives. They are making a difference. They are dedicated to saving the lives of their friends, peers and classmates. Constantly faced with the consequences of those making bad choices, these members are often picking up the shattered pieces and experiencing those shattered dreams. There are choices. Which choice will you make? The choice to take lives or to save lives?
Although the crash is a tragic, graphic drama, we have strived to make it accurate and realistic. It will be utilized as a real training exercise for emergency personnel. We are fortune to have such expertise helping with this program. Debbie Akers, regional education EMS cordinator will simulate all injuries. Extricating experts from Christiansburg Rescue and Fire Departments will help ensure accurate entrapment and rescue procedures. Together, we hope to get the message across. You drink, you drive, you could die. The public is invited to the event, which starts at 1 p.m. on Friday.
