A 38-year-old Christiansburg man is now in custody following a fatal shooting which took place earlier Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Salem Food Lion.
Brian Stuart Sheppard was taken into custody on Route 11 at the top of Christiansburg Mountain by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office late Tuesday afternoon. It’s alleged that Sheppard fatally shot 48-year-old James Richard Fleshman, Jr., of Roanoke, shortly before 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Food Lion on Wildwood Drive In Salem. Melinda Payne, spokeswoman for the Salem Police Department, said an altercation between Sheppard and Fleshman took place in the store’s parking lot and that Fleshman was shot multiple times. According to various reports, Sheppard was taken into custody a short time later after a customer at Rugs and Stuff on Roanoke Street (Route 11) saw a man sitting next to his car, which was stopped in a turning lane. The man was holding a gun and saying, "I don't want to go back to jail." The customer called 9-1-1 and reported what they observed. Salem police are not releasing a motive at this time. Police have charged Sheppard with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Sheppard is being held at the Roanoke County/Salem Jail without bond.
