More than 120 senior citizens from across the New River Valley will show off their athletic abilities starting Sunday, as the 30th Annual New River Valley Senior Olympics-Games starts its week-long event which covers 21 different sports.
The Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department is organizing this year’s activities, which will involve seniors 50 years of age and older from Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Floyd County, Montgomery County, Wytheville, Giles, Pulaski and the City of Radford.
The Seniors Olympics gives our seniors an opportunity to have fun, socialize with friends and make new friends, while showing off their athletic abilities,” said Tammy Caldwell of the Christiansburg Parks and recreation Department. “It’s all about our seniors enjoying themselves.”
The most popular event this year is riflery with 33 participants, followed by bowling with 28 participants, according to Caldwell.
The oldest female participating is 89-year-old Sallie Grogan of Giles County. This young lady of heart will be showing off her athletic ability in bocce ball, mini-golf, riflery, softball hit/throw, basketball free throws, shot put/discus and bowling this year.
Leonard Howery of Blacksburg is the oldest male competing at the young and active age of 90-years-old. Howery will be competing in bowling and horseshoes.
“We hope the public will come out and support our senior athletes at the different venues,” Caldwell said.
The NRV Senior Olympic-Games prepares people to participate in the Virginia Senior Games at the state level.
This year’s senior state games will be held in Virginia Beach from May 8 to May 11.
Caldwell added that nine people from the NRV area will be competing at Virginia Beach.
