The former executive officer with the New River Valley Home Builders Association was recently indicted by a Montgomery County Grand Jury for embezzling more than $48,000 from her former employer.
Katrina Anne Gravely, of Emmanuel Road in Willis, Va., was indicted on one count of embezzlement and two counts of forgery. According to court documents, Gravely allegedly embezzled around $48,000 from the home builders association during the time frame of Jan. 24, 2006 and Nov. 13, 2007. The forgery charges came when she wrote herself two checks and cashed them, both for $4,000, on March 8, 2007 and June 27, 2007. According a search warrant filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court, Bryan Rice of the New River Valley Home Builders Association came to the Christiansburg Police Department on Nov. 13, 2007 and reported that an employee allegedly had used the business account to pay her personal bills. After looking through the checks, they contacted Katrina A. Gravely and she told them she had made a mistake when conduction business and used the wrong account number to pay some of her bills and her business, Southerleight, Ltd. The investigator spoke with Ms. Gravely and she had told police that she knew she owed the Home Builders Association about $34,000 and that she was trying to sell cattle to pay them back because it was a mistake. The warrant went on to read, that in October of 2006, allegedly Ms. Gravely ordered large amounts of color paper and charged them to the New River Valley Home Builders Association, Inc. She then made copies of a flyer for her company, Southerleigh Ltd. Premium All Natural Beef and had them placed in the Roanoke Times. An official with the Roanoke Times confirmed the inserts and has copies of them. Court documents also showed that Gravely was allegedly charged with uttering and embezzlement in Michigan in 1996. She was also charged with 10 counts of forgery, two counts of credit card fraud, bad checks, driving suspended and possession of marijuana in South Carolina during the time frame of 1987 and 1998. In addition, she was charged with two counts of forgery, embezzlement and failing to appear in court in Virginia Beach between 1994 and 1995. Gravely's trial date is scheduled for May 21, 2008 in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
