There was a variety of food, everything from the usual hot dogs to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, as the Student Government Association sponsored its second annual Hokie Spirit Community Picnic Sunday afternoon on the campus drillfield. The event allowed the students and the Blacksburg residents to come together for an afternoon of food, games and fellowship.
“There are no boundaries separating Virginia Tech and Blacksburg, “ said Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam. "Our destinies are so closely inclined that to know each other as people and to find different ways to work together, this is a good opportunity to do that.”
Students created the Community Picnic last year as an expression of solidarity and hope in the face of adversity in light of the April 16 shootings. The drillfield allowed for the gathering of students, university employees and the wider community.
The three-hour event, which started at 1 p.m., featured plenty of food from area businesses including Jimmy Johns, Macados, Dominos, as well as numerous other local businesses.
One interesting fact, which Mayor Rordam pointed out, was the Kroger’s booth had enough bread to make 9,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
When I asked one of the student workers at the booth as to how many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches they had made, she replied with a laugh, “I lost count after the first one.”
In addition to food and drinks, which was provided by Coca-Cola, there was plenty of music and games.
“This is very nice, “ said Amanda Branham of Blacksburg. “This gives us town residents a chance to mingle with the students and vice-versa.”

I really enjoyed the picnic. It was nice seeing the town and tech students mingle with each other. Hopefully one day tech will realize what the town has done for them and starting paying their fair share of taxes around here.
