Thousands Enjoy Va. Tech's Spring Football Game PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Grimes

The spirit is back. You could feel it as you drove through downtown Blacksburg Saturday morning. You could feel it as you worked your way through traffic on the Virginia Tech campus. Yes, you could even feel it as you saw the fans and tailgaters surrounding Lane Stadium, and you most definitely felt it on the opening kickoff of the annual Spring Football Game Saturday afternoon.

More than 30,000 Hokie fans filed into Lane Stadium to witness this year’s Spring Football Game after a one-year absence.  Last year’s Spring game was cancelled out of respect of the 32 lives lost just days prior to the game in what was the most deadliest shooting rampage in the nation.

However, Saturday you could feel that Hokie Spirit. Fans lined the streets of downtown Blacksburg, as they looked and shopped, many buying their Hokie gear for the game and the upcoming season.

“I just spent a small fortune at the bookstore,” said Lisa Johanson of Martinsville. “Now, my kid’s want to go to Moe’s to eat and there goes what little money I had left.”

Outside Lane Stadium, you could smell the aroma of fired-up grills and food that included everything from burgers to ribs and everything in between.

Children and adults tossed footballs across the parking lot, many laughed and talked football, while others were seen partaking in their favorite adult beverage.

“We really need this,” said one fan from Harrisonburg. “This game really helps in the healing progress and its just a small thing that brings thousands of Hokie fans together to celebrate and to support one another.”

Macado’s was on hand with its usual subs, chips, pickles and drinks and on the hillside behind them; you can find Scott Stevens and Rick Watson doing their pre-game show.

Once inside Lane Stadium, the smell of cooking Turkey Legs met you, along with 30,000-plus fans looking for the best seat in the house.

When it was all over a couple of hours later, the fans braved the light showers to get autographs and to say to each other, “ See you in the fall.”

Yes, the Spirit is back.
