Investigations Ongoing In 2007 Virginia Tech Shootings PDF Print E-mail

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Virginia Tech Police Department are still working with local and federal law enforcement on the investigations into the tragic incidents that took place on the Virginia Tech campus April 16, 2007. The investigations of the 32 homicides, 24 attempted homicides and one suicide that took place at Norris Hall and West Ambler Johnston (WAJ) Residency Hall on that fateful day remain ongoing and will continue as active cases for at least several more months.

"A criminal investigative case of this magnitude and depth is unprecedented in Virginia's history," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. "The amount of hours and resources put forth by State Police, Virginia Tech Police, Blacksburg Police, FBI, ATF, and countless other local and federal investigators towards this investigation has been remarkable and is testament to the commitment, determination and expertise of these law-enforcement professionals."

Though both agencies are collaborating on the investigations, Virginia Tech Police have maintained the lead investigating agency on the WAJ deaths and the State Police serve as the lead on the Norris Hall investigation.

"The two investigations are obviously intertwined and both, by necessity, remain active at this time," said Chief Wendell Flinchum, Virginia Tech Police Department. "Our departments have been tasked with an awesome responsibility and we owe it to every family affected by this horrible incident to be nothing but thorough and complete in our investigations."

During the past year, investigators have received additional leads that are still being pursued and analyzed. Investigators are also still assembling and reviewing more than 30 volumes of evidentiary and investigative reports. The transcription of more than 450 telephone calls related to the incident has just been completed and are now being reviewed as evidence.

Investigators are also now in receipt of the complete analysis report from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on more than 250 pieces of ballistic evidence. The report is in the process of being analyzed and incorporated into the investigative files.

"We are still confident that Seung-Hui Cho acted alone in committing these crimes," said Colonel Flaherty. "His secretive nature and the fact that he confided in no one about his plans have made it extremely challenging for investigators to reconstruct the events of his life and activities leading up to and on April 16 as there is nobody out there to corroborate our findings and theories."

Investigators are also still searching for Cho's computer hard-drive, cell phone and wallet.

"These investigations will continue for as long as the case agents need to bring them to a logical conclusion," said Colonel Flaherty.
