After serving the past 21 years as mayor of Floyd, Skip Bishop announced Thursday night that he would be stepping down from that position effective June 20.
Bishop, who served as a teacher and coach at Floyd County High School, was encouraged to take the mayor’s position by Floyd’s former mayor Gino Williams, who is now a judge. Since being appointed 21 years ago, Bishop has been re-elected to the mayor’s seat three times. Under Bishop’s leadership, Floyd has made several big changes, including the town beginning to try to obtain Transportation Enhancement Act (TEA-21) grants to help refurbish an historic cemetery and to establish trails and walkways. In addition, the town has also obtained Community Development Block Grants for upgrade of facades and buildings and economic development. The town is also currently investigating Innovation Grants, and would be the first Virginia locality to obtain the new grants.
After retiring from teaching, Bishop continued to coach the Buffaloes, and has won four Group A state golf titles, the most recent state crown came last season. The popular coach also announced that he would be retiring from coaching. At this point, it’s unsure if Floyd Town Council will appoint someone to fill Bishop’s spot or if someone from town council will resign and move into the mayor’s seat.

Although I am sure there are many good, qualified people to do the job, Floyd will be hard-pressed to find someone to fill his shoes .
