Radford Relay For Life Starts Tonight PDF Print E-mail

The first of several Relay for Life Walks scheduled throughout the New River Valley this year, will take place starting tonight, as Radford kicks off their annual event at the Radford Recreation Center beginning at 6 p.m.

 

As of Thursday afternoon, 37 teams and 462 participants have already signed up for tonight’s events, which starts with the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and the Survivor’s lap at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Caregiver’s lap.

 

A survivor’s dinner will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the recreation center and its open to all cancer survivors.

 

“We expect about 300 people for our survivor’s dinner,” said Marie Archer, who is in charged of the dinner. “I’m really excited about this year’s event and we will all have lots of fun.”

 

According to Amber Parson, an RU student, who is one of the tri-chairperson, this year’s goal is $75,000. “As of late Thursday afternoon, more than $24,000 has been raised,” said Parson.

 

“We have a lot of activities aimed at all age groups planned, “ said Parson. “Everyone will have a lot of fun and it’s all for a good cause.”

 

Some of the activities planned throughout the 12-hour event include, dance contests, a fashion show, karaoke and a lot more.

 

The Luminary Ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. and will be held indoors this year.

 


2008 Red Carpet Relay Activities

 

4:30-6:00 PM  Survivor Reception – Food provided by Sal’s Restaurant for Survivors

 

4:30-9:00 PM Kids Crafts Table Open – Hopefully Lowes will donate a craft table where kids can do some different crafts. There will be other various things for kids to do.

 

6:00 PM    Opening Ceremony

 

6:30 PM  Survivor Lap then Caregiver Lap

 

7:00 PM Frozen T-Shirt Contest – We will freeze some t-shirts and have a contest to see who can get their t-shirt on first

 

7:30 PM  Children’s Lap

 

8:00 PM Dance Dance Dance – This will be a time to do different Line Dances, Chicken Dance, Macarena, etc to get spirit points for your team.

 

8:00 PM  Sign ups for Relay Idol & Fashion Show

 

9:00 PM  Luminaria Ceremony – Will be inside this year

 

9:30 PM- closing Create Your Own Star – A scrapbook table set up with stars that you can decorate with a name, or picture or whatever, to honor someone special who has fought cancer, and can be displayed around the track.

 Hand out Activity Packet– We will hand out an activity packet with work sheets with different puzzles and questions that can be turned in at the end of the night for spirit points.

 

9:30 PM Hand out Boxes for “Pimp your Ride” – Every team will get a box that they can decorate how ever they want with supplies that you bring to Relay. (Paint, Markers, Glue, Feathers, etc) Be very Creative!

 

10:00PM Fashion Show – This is the time to show everyone your costumes and theme. Think of it as a premiere and you have to go down the red carpet and get your picture taken.

 

10:30 PM  Kickboxing/Exercise Class – An exercise instructor will come in and teach a class

 

10:30 PM Let’s Make a Deal/ Junk Drawer – Attached is a list of random things that we may ask for. If you have it, you get a spirit point, the first person to come to the stage with it, can play lets make a deal, and will be given a chance to either take an envelope and hope for a lot of spirit points inside or take a chance at doing an activity. The activity may be something like take a lap backwards, sing a song, etc, that you can earn spirit points for.

 

11:30 PM  “Pimp your Ride” Contest (Box Car) – We will have judges with certain criteria that will judge the decorated box car’s and select a winner!

 

12:00midnight Midnight Music Madness – Hopefully we can find a band, or guitar player to perform some live music for us!

 

1:00 AM Newlywed Game show – This will be a version of the Newlywed game show, of how well do you know your friend. Pairs of friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, or co-workers, can volunteer to play and find out how well you know each other.

 

2:00 AM  Relay Idol – Kareoke!

 

3:00 AM   Dessert Social – Who needs a sugar high at 3AM?

 

3:30 AM Celeb Trivia Game – We will have a powerpoint with different questions such as Match a Movie with its Song or Name that Celeb. Each team will have an answer sheet to fill out with their answers and winners get spirit points.

 

4:30 AM  Activity Packets are due

 

4:30 AM Game Time – Try to wake up and get some energy in fun things such as Limbo, musical chairs, etc

 

5:00 AM Fight Back and Awards Ceremony – Most Spirit Points! Top Team Fundraiser! Top Youth Individual Fundraiser! Top Adult Individual Fundraiser! Most Themed Team!

 

6:00 AM  Closing Ceremonies 

 

Spirit Points: Awarded throughout the night for contests, games, participation and enthusiasm. Team with the most spirit points at the end of the night will win Most Spirited Team!
