Large Crowd Turns Out For International Street Fair PDF Print E-mail
Larry Middleton

The Virginia Tech Council of International Students Organization's (CISO) annual International Street Fair 2008, was held at Squires Student center on Saturday.

The Hokie Bird, flying the USA flag, joined with flag-waving students from the Far East, Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, and countries of the world.  The colorful parade was initiated within the Squires ballroom, and parlayed into a march around the drill-field. Tears of joy streamed down the faces of many, as they proudly marched in unison.  The flag bearers slowly, soulfully circled the VA Tech memorial for the VT students that were lost on April 16, 2007.  When they returned to Squires, the crowded ballroom was entertained very well.  A huge party erupted.

Enticing aromas filled the air as the thousands of visitors filled their plates with delicacies.  The ballroom stage was the scene for unique dancing and musical performances.  Many within the ballroom enjoyed special dance lessons that resulted in a line of performers and visitors dancing through the joyful audience.

Jewelry, special wares, and ethnic garments were marketed; models wearing ethnic-specific outfits added to the special ambience.

Perhaps the somewhat rainy day helped bring the diverse cultures together in many intimate ways at Squires, as opposed to being spread out on the once blocked-off street fair area.  The attendees seemed to savor the closeness of one another; the Fair was filled with love for mankind.

It was a Fair that this reporter did not want to leave, even after a couple of hours. What a unique day of special fun!
