A melodic treat was enjoyed in downtown Floyd Sunday at the June Bug Center. The event was a joy to experience, and it seemed that all present felt the joy.
The James A. Bland Music Scholarship Contest is sponsored by the Floyd Lions Club.
Area younger-age music artists were invited to compete for cash awards that will help the 1st-Place winners compete in Roanoke on April 15, 2008; 2nd and 3rd-place winners were also given cash awards.
From operatic selections to guitarists, the diversity and quality pleased the crowded June Bug Center. The performers could become famous someday; starting in Floyd is a step forward for exposure to talent-scouts with keen senses used for evaluation of artists' possibilities. Fun was the main venue of the day. Families and residents seemed to greatly appreciate the expertise shown by the young artists, knowing that they had spent much time honing their skills.
Ms. Linda Fallon was the Master of Ceremonies. Accompanists were Sandra Smith, piano, and Scott Perry, guitar. Judges for instrumentals were Judy Bevans and Catherine Fendley. Vocalist judges were Nicholas Carroll and Vickie Sowers.
At the reception that followed, excited winners were heard confirming the details of the April 15th competition in Roanoke.
