Striking UAW Workers Back On The Job At Volvo PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Grimes

It was back to work Monday, as 2600 striking UAW Local 2069 workers returned to their jobs at the New River Valley Volvo plant after spending the past seven weeks on the picket line.

“Things went very good,” said UAW Local 2069 President Lester Hancock Monday night. “The people were working together and the spirits were high.”

The local UAW went on strike Feb. 1 after talks broke down over health and safety issues and callback rights.

During that time, 2600 members of the local union, as well as several other UAW groups from up and down the East Coast picketed outside of Volvo’s three entrances.

Just two weeks ago, Volvo and UAW voted to return to the tables and after meeting for a few days, a tentative contract was reached. Last week, the UAW ratified the new 3-year contract by 90 percent of its membership.

“We should be at top speed by week’s end,” said Hancock. “All three shifts are currently starting production and union-made Volvo trucks will be rolling off the assembly line soon.”

Hancock did say that everyone was back to work except for 48 people who are still laid off.

Phone calls to Volvo North American seeking comments about the UAW being backed to work on Monday were not returned.

Hmmm, wonder why there is so many that are unsatisfied with the contract they voted to approve. Seems some of the "old guard' are getting bit in the butt by the point system they voted for in the new contract and are very unhappy.
Looks like the UAW sold out the members again. Surprise? NOT!
