The Pulaski Police Department is warning citizens of a sweepstakes scam that has surfaced in the area in which people are being informed by mail of winning a lump sum of money.
According to Cpl G.W. Quesinberry, the department received information on Friday of citizens receiving a check in the mail with a letter advising them that they have won a lump sum of money. The letter advises the recipient to cash the check in order to receive payment. In return, the recipient must pay a tax, which is lower than the amount on the check. An investigation by the Pulaski Police Department has revealed that the checks originate from Canada and have no face value. If you receive a check in the mail that indicates that you have won a sweepstakes, you are asked prior to cashing it, that you contact your local bank to check its authenticity. Local banks have advised that they can confirm the validation of the check and they are able to track it if it is found to be fraudulent.
